What video formats do most household dvd players today read?

The "industry standard" is DVD-R. I don't know why they make DVD+R. Come to think of it, I don't know why they make these silly differences.
 
Most of them do now yes. For a while some read only DVD-R or DVD+R or DVD RW and some wouldn't read either. Now that DVD burning is more common pretty much all of them will read anything. If you want to be sure if your player reads them check the manual. If you're buying one it will say on the box and there will likely be a sticker on the demo model that tells you too.
