What were cellphone programs called before the iphone was invented?

Now any programs for cellphones, even non-iphones, are called apps, but I don't remember this term being used back when palm pilots and blackberrys were the only advanced phones out there, even though there were programs available for them - granted they were no where as broad as the apps available for phones now. I ask because on macs programs are called applications, but in pcs they are called programs, and I see the cellphone programs being called apps as a sign of the growing influence of apple over the technology industry.
 
They're called programs or applications or apps. The iphone has the App Store, that's the only new thing.
 
My blackberry calls them applications. It's just that iphones have outrageous ones like ordering from pizza hut and junk like that, lol, so they're more popular. And kids these days cut words in half.
