before he was president he was a senator and came up with the spot resolution, which was one of the disputes in the mexican war
the south seceded from the union, created the confederacy
suspension of the habeaus corpus without asking congress for approval

The serfs were emancipated in Russia -1861
The Taiping Rebellion in China - 1850-1864
Otto von Bismarck becomes Prime minister of Prussia - 1862
Maximilian installed as emperor of Mexico - 1863
International Red Cross founded in Switzerland - 1864

The Civil War both started and ended.

African American Slaves were freed and given citizenship rights as laid out in his Emancipation Proclamation (including the right to vote).

The Battle of Gettysburg took place in Pennslyvania and Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address to honor those who died.

He was shot and killed 5 days after the Union won the civil war.
