I live in chicago and I realized today that I am fed up with having a useless little 2 door hatchback Accent.

I want to look into an SUV or pickup to get, so that I can better handle crippling snow storms but I am hardly a rich individual. So what would be a reliable but cheap used SUV that has things like anti-lock brakes and 4 wheel drive (or traction control if that is cheaper)? I am looking for one around $4500-$5000. Any suggestions?
I guess bottom line, a truck or SUV that can drive well through snow, is cheap, but won't breakdown every other week.

Jeep, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, or Toyota 1/4 ton pickup or 1/4 ton SUV of almost any of those brands. Look for something with an "auto" 4wd mode. I would stay away from a used Dodge with very many miles...their transmissions are VERY prone to early failure if it was used for towing or anything that puts stress on them.

based on your price range , i beleive an 01-03 ford explorer is your best choice
they are plentiful on the market and low prices are common.

they are reliable when maintained (regular oil changes and transmission service) and can easy go 200,000 miles +

make sure you service the transmission and axles (fluid changes) when you buy any used suv
most people neglect these areas and neglect can lead to unnecessary repairs

Jeep wrangler of Grand Cherokee, there fairly cheap, they are tough reliable, and If they do have problems there easy to fix.
