What's a good place to live in LA?

I'm turning 19 soon and I would like to move out on my own. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for places that are moderately affordable and safe and in urban areas. Please don't suggest South LA lol. I heard Koreatown and Echo Park/Silverlake are pretty decent. Thoughts?
