Richardson Bike Mart is a well known and huge shop in your area. Might want to check it out. REI also. They would certainly be able to give you expert advice and have just the bike for you. Of course, most local bike shops could probably do the same.

If you are interested in serious, long, fast road riding, then a road bike is what you want. Weight, gearing, wheels and geometry designed for that.

If neighborhood riding, then a hybrid would let you do that nicely and for much less money. More comfortable too. Try to find one with no front shock. Added weight and not needed for street riding.

Fit is First. Get advice on size needed for your height and then try several before buying. Sizing is part art, part science.
