Whats the best way to learn how to modify bikes?

I bought my first bike last summer, a Suzuki SV650SF. I want to shorten the lights, get some LED blinkers, and maybe add some more lights on the sides for visibility (visibility is my main goal). Whats the best way to learn how to modify bikes? I want be a do it myselfer, but I don't know where to start! How did you guys learn? Are there any good tutorial websites? Books?
 
Have someone help you or teach you. Trust me otherwise you cant really learn and it will be a pain in the ass to learn everything by yourself.
