What's the best way to make a slideshow that I can burn to CD or DVD?

I need to make a slideshow of pictures. Would it be best to burn the pictures on a CD and just pop it in the DVD player and let it show each pic, or should I create an actual slideshow using a certain program (like windows media player or some other online software). What I'm confused about is this: If I make an actual slideshow using some program, will it still play in the DVD player or would it only work if I played it off a computer? Playing it off the computer is not an option which is why I'm asking.
