Wine is made from fermented fruit juice and then typically aged. The majority of all wine is made from grapes, but there are sweeter fruit wines made from apple juice, cherry juice, raspberry juice, etc.

Wine is not made from the type of grapes you buy at the store. There are literally hundreds of varieties of grapes, and what you see as the "type of wine" may tell you what grape was used to make the wine. For example, Chardonnay is a type of "white grape", though it's actually a pale green, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot are types of red grapes, though they are actually purple. However, not all wines are named for the grape that goes into making them. Lots of wines are named for the region where they are made. For example, a Bordeaux is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that is made in Bordeax, France and Chianti is a blend of 3-4 different grapes, but has to be at least 70% Sangiovese and must be made in the Chianti region of Tuscany, Italy. There is another wine you've probably heard of called Burgundy. While most people think of a red wine when they hear the word Burgundy, there is actually a red burgundy and a white burgundy. Interestingly, the "red" is just Pinot Noir and the "white" is just Chardonnay...but in the wine world a Pinot Noir or Chardonnay from Burgundy, France is simply known as Burgundy.

I must correct the person who told you that Sangria red or white wine with mascerated fruit: this is not quite right. She was correct in saying that it's really more of a cocktail, but it's actually red or white wine with a mixute of other types of alcohol. I work at a Spanish restaurant and our recipe came from Spain. I have been told that it is "the authentic" recipe, but if you seach the internet, there are dozens making the same claim. Ours has wine, brandy, gin and triple sec. We add just a splash of 7-up at the end and garnish it with chopped fruit. It's yummy, but if you don't like wine, you might not like it, as some of the characteristics of wine do come through all the other added flavors.

Wine is an entire genre, and chardonnay is a type of white wine. Sangria is usually red wine, but can be white, and is made by macerating fruit in it - so it's a drink, but not something that you'd have with a meal.......
