What's the difference between RIPPING a DVD and CONVERTING a DVD?

I have DVDs that I want to put onto a flash drive. I know I have to get it them be AVI files. Would I need a DVD RIPPER or a CONVERTER? The one I'm looking at is www.dvdfab.com

No difference, just different slang.

ripping it takes it from the source and copies it where ever your putting it. And you would need a converter by the looks of your question.

Ripping a DVD copies the files in their original format to your hard drive. Converting a DVD changes the format to something more useful, such as AVI. But, converting a DVD also involves ripping the data on it, so there is plenty of crossover among the terms.

Also, I would suggest not buying the products on that website until you have tested several freeware alternatives, especially if they are older DVDs or DVDs you personally recorded.

Very Similar. All I know that ripping a DVD allows you to get a copy of the dvd on your hard drive however depending on what ripping software you use you will probably not get the file in avi format. but with multiple files like vob formats.

Then to get it in to the avi format your wil probably need to convert the file using a file converter maybe like "Format Factory" http://download.cnet.com/FormatFactory/3000-2194_4-10968547.html or anything else.
