what's the matter with my truck? idling up and down/dies out...?

engine light has been on for quite some time now, for the past few months the idling has been up and down til it sometimes dies out( usually when i come to a stop, turn the steering wheel..etc) mpg decreased somewhat(although changing my air filter helped out some/ lot of city stopping and going) and i'm finally fed up with this problem.

i went to an auto parts store where they 'diagnosed' my truck and the results came back as : faulty ECM and faulty TPS... so i was going to get a local mechanic to replace the TPS(throttle position sensor) since his diagnostic test would run $80 then whatever's wrong......he was gonna charge me $175+...........so if not the tps, what might this problem be?

thomas, appreciate it..fuel filter changed less than a yr ago, new plugs/wires less than 6 months ago and about a week or so ago i added some techron, which i do from time to time...but this problem has been going on for several months and finally got fed up with it and time to take care of it.................. what now???
 
Simple problem my man! It's the idle air control valve. It's probably dirty and needs cleaning. Your idle should be better. Check out source if you need tip how to clean it.
 
Well to start of with low price first then hi.
Price varies with vehicle and brand of item
So start from the bottom up
You got a new breather filter so that's good
Your FUEL FILTER may be clogged new one let say $8-$18
INJECTORS clogged get some FUEL INJETION CLEANER $2-$6
Foaled SPARK PLUGES $2-$5 each
Foaled SPARK PLUGE WIRES $15-$40
OK now that's the basic tune up you want to do all that i mentioned anyways you would not regret it.
All the little stuff make a big difference in a 4 cyl...
o ya to top it of give your car a simple oil change it wont fix your problem but i will sure help it run smoother.
go full synthetic on the oil thats the best for you truck
If this doesn't fix you problem then go for the pricey stuff
