scarcity, gardening, and Cain & Abel? Been trying to "rediscover" this book for years; only just recently thought of asking if anyone here might know it. It's an old sci-fi book I read a long time ago, and I don't remember the name of the book, nor - unfortunately - do I remember the author. What I do remember, though, is that it takes place on one of the outer planets or moons in our solar system, far in the future when we've established colonies there and have big space freighters with passengers and cargo going back and forth between those colonies and Earth.
The protagonist works as a kind of personal assistant, butler, gardener, etc., in the home of his brother (or half-brother?) and the whole Cain & Abel, "Am I my brother's keeper?" thing is a running theme throughout the book. Water - or the lack of it - is also a big deal on this colony (but no, the book is not Dune; that much I know), there's an issue with inheritance and the missing will of the protagonist and brother's late father, and there's even a girl who gets introduced later in the book after the protagonist finds out she was a stowaway on one of the freighter ships.
Anyway, really hoping this rings a bell for someone who can remember the title and/or author. Would love to read it again, but I'm almost starting to think I just hallucinated the whole book, considering how hard it's been to find any clues.
