My favourite is The Thing but that was in 1982

So it will have to be Close Encounters of the Third Kind - just because it is hilarious

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) the original and the best version. The effect is miles better in black and white. Gort is far more scary and intimidating than its remake counterpart! I remember seeing the movie when I was teens and thought it was awesome. It is wonderfully dark and foreboding.

Haven't seen The Island Earth but it looks interesting from the clip you posted and the imdb write up, might check it out if i can find it somewhere. Some of those older flicks have an old fashioned sensibility about them but themes and story are far more interesting than some of the crap churned out today thats for sure...
