They chant the names of Buddhas or Bodhisattvas. They could also recite sutras.

I don't feel the need to pray. In mortal peril, I try to stay calm and think things through.

Actually there are a number of Buddhist sects some of which do in fact pray for help. However in theory the Buddhist approach to feeling in mortal peril is to accept that will be will be and it's an error to be overly attached to your life.
