When did servers get rid of newsgroup icons?

Years ago every server allowed direct access to newsgroups, which one could subscribe to and read like email on one's computer without having to go to a web page. Now Google owns the groups and so far as I know there's no such access as before. Furthermore, one has to sign in with one's official email address, which is then exposed. Is it still possible to access these newsgroups from one's personal browser in the style of email? (For those who may not know, a "newsgroup" is really a comment group with focus on a particular topic, not a real public news service. So there were hierarchies such as rec.music.classical, alt.music.bob-dylan, etc. I'm sure most of you know this (!) but I'm adding it just in case.)
