When do you use gears on a bike?

I have a bike and it has either 18 or 24 gears, I've forgotten, sorry but I haven't seen it since waaaaay back last year and I'm going on a bike ride on Thursday which is consisting of a bit of everything: Road, flat and slightly inclined, grass and basically everything you could imagine on riding a bike through a town to a National Trust park.

So I was just wondering, when do I use my gears to make riding easier?

Thank you.

When you want to change effort, or to alter the effect your pedalling has on the transmission of your effort to the wheels. On a flat run, put it in the middle gear and leave it there. Or experiment if you like to find the effects. You'll remember - it's like riding a bike.

Use the center sprocket in the front most of the time with any gear on the back. For hills that are too steep for the center sprocket switch to the smallest or #1 and the first 4 on the back. Going fast or down hill use #3 on the front with the 4 highest on the rear.

Start out with an easy 10 min warm up and then start pedaling at 70-90 rpm's in a gear that is easy to spin. Always spin in a easy gear no matter if you are riding. The human body is most efficient at that speed. Pedaling slower and mashing on the pedaling will kill your legs very quickly.
