does it mean they are scared but their ashamed to show it?

psh... i know guys LOL. XD they are just trying to act tough. In the inside, they go like. HOLY CRAP THIS IS SCARY GET ME OUT OF HERE!!

well it depends
maybe they are laughing because they think it is the stupidest thing on the face of the earth and isnt scary at all
or that they are trying to sound all macho

or it could be that they are actually scared, but i highly doubt that one
