When people use the upwards arrow (^) in equations on the internet, what

does it mean? See Matt's question about simplifying equations to see what I'm talking about :)
 
x^2 means x squared
a^b means a to the power of b

It's difficult to type maths :(
If only we could type everywhere in LaTeX... I can always dream!
