When songs or albums get leaked onto the internet ahead of their release dates?

Who is usually responsible for leaking the material?
Record companies then usually push the release dates forward because of the leak.
My question is how did the person who leaked it get hold of the material.Is it an inside source from the record company?
Or do the record companies do it themselves to get some publicity ahead of the album release?
 
Well there are things called Trojans which is backdoor access to someone elses Computer. That might be the case

edit: Then again I am just some stupid kid so what do I know lol
