...do something to change it? The world, it seems, is in a period of revolt against the abuses of power by their governments. Though the severity of protest varies from entire nations (e.g. Ireland) participating in relatively peaceful protest to out and out violent revolution(e.g. Tunisia). I know that I am not alone in thinking that both the US and Canadian governments act without accountability and often against a majority of their citizenry. We have tried occasional peaceful protests, I have yet to see it bring about any change. I saw my Canadian charter rights trampled on this past summer at the G20, I've seen US citizens stripped of their rights via the Patriot Act. And while I don't think I will wake up tomorrow to a police state, I now know that it could happen even here. The rich are getting richer and the middle class is disappearing.
The example of Tunisian corruption and crimes are more sever than anything we have seen in North America, if we allow our governments to continue unchallenged we will get there.
I don't think that violence should be used as a tool for change but , in the words of J.F.K. "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible make violent revolution inevitable". And peaceful revolution is becoming more and more restricted and less effective (I'd argue it has no effect now, think of the 10 million who marched against the war in Iraq around the world, the largest protest ever seen. It didn't even cause the Bush administration to hesitate at all)
Finally I should distinguish that I am not taking my cue's from people like Glenn Beck, or right wing radicals. They are part of the problem. I simply want to know how much longer we will accept this faux-democracy, the gutting of our rights at home and the rights of those abroad, and the absolute rape of the middle class and the poor while the super rich gain from our loss? When will we be willing to fight for democracy for all?
