Where did the title of 'A Clockwork Orange' come from?

I've always been curious. It has nothing to do with the movie! I know it was a book, and it probably explains why in the book, but I'd likr to know up front.

It comes from the cockney slang 'queer as a clockwork orange', meaning something that looks normal and natural on the outside, but internally is bizarre and unnatural. Alex, the main character can portray this sort of behaviour all the way through the film with his twisted personality and actions.

By the end of the film, he does become the clockwork man that the other answers here have mentioned. Just thought it was important to note that he fits the 'clockwork orange' meaning from the beginning of the film too!

Well, i know that the 'orange' part comes from the indonesian word 'orang' which means person. And in this novel, they were trying to make a respectale man out of .. can't remember his name. In other words, they were trying to get him to be good without having to consciously think of being good, so that he'd run like 'clockwork'.
So, an' orang' that goes off like clockwork - a clockwork orange.

Badly explained, but i'm tired.
