where is the engine number located on 98 jeep grand cherokee?

where is the engine number located on 98 jeep grand cherokee. I've been told that some of these older jeeps may not even have them stamped on the engine - would that be correct?

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate is attached to the top left side of the instrument panel.

The 8th position relates to what engine came with the vehicle:

S = 4.0 Liter
N = 4.7 Liter
J = 4.7 Liter High Output
4 = 3.1 Liter Turbo Diesel (export, 1999-2001)
A = 2.7 Liter Turbo Diesel (export, 2002-2004)

The number on the engine its self is not usually needed.
