Who knows the title or author of this sci-fi/ fantasy book?

I read many years ago a book about a viking/north-lander style princess on a quest of revenge for the massacre of her people. It turned out that the book was the first of a trilogy or series. Along her travels she meets a handsome prince, he rescues her from a terrible death in the desert after being bound by rawhide thongs and left there by Amazonian warriors. That part has always stuck with me even though the title didn't. This was a a really good read and would love to hear if anyone knows the title/ author.
