Different kinds of science fiction could be the space opera kind, like Battlestar galactica, or speculative science fiction, that deals with new and unusual ways to imagine the future, or hard sci fi that deals with alot of technical detail and sound scientific theory. A nerdy question I know, but I wanted to start writing some sci fi and I wanted to get a general perception of what different people think of it.

I used to love it 25 or more years ago. Asimov, Bradbury, A C Clark

I enjoy a lotta science fiction, but if I had to choose one specific one I would go with space opera and military sci-fi hands down. However, I loathe and detest cheesy science fiction and time travel science fiction. I don't like time travel sci-fi because it is paradoxical and generally confusing.

I like space opera. I also like interesting takes on the relatively near future and on alternate history. I like most science fiction in fact. One thing that we have way too much of in the current market is the military-oriented stuff that loses the characters in detailed descriptions of weaponry and battle tactics. My other pet peeve is authors who fail to think out their premises.

I, too, like space opera. A good site to get the gist of modern s-f is Anotherealm.com. They have a flash fiction contest (running now) which you or anyone can get into.

Enjoy!
