Why are Blu-ray run times slightly longer than DVD run times?

I've noticed when I'm in HMV and I compare the run time of a blu-ray film to the same film on DVD (most of the time the blu-ray isn't a directors cut either) the blu-ray run time is always slightly longer by about 3-5 minutes than the DVD version (e.g. the film Orphan). Why is this because it's really making my brain itch?
