Why are human-beings always included in sci fi - fantasy universes?

In every one of them - Warcraft, Warhammer, Star Wars, 40k, Narnia, etc. . In reality, how could humans possibly coexist in a world full of much stronger creatures (orcs, trolls, whatever) and smarter as well (elves, draenei, etc.) . OK, i know you are gonna say "it's a fantasy world, you can make it whatever you want no matter how unrealistic", but even in that sense it doesn't seem that humans should fit in with superior creatures. Could it be that the creators wanted to include humans in order to make it more familiar and avoid alienating the viewers?

The alien characters represent ourselves.

We all face questions in our lives for which we have no ready answer. We get "caught off guard".

So movies with aliens are just representations of those moments when we realize that we don't have that ready answer.

My favorite is the movie "Signs" with Mel Gibson. At the end of the movie his character is faced with the choice of either saving his son or killing the alien. He saves his son and his brother kills the alien.

What this represents is the choice that we face in how to best achieve the salvation of others. Do we fight and let others run away? Or do we run away together and allow evil to escape unpunished?

In that film, the main character is actually "split" into two. One runs away with the innocent (an act of salvation) while the other remains to punish the evil.

The whole movie is about the duality of ourselves and how we resolve that duality.
