Why are my hills on The Sims 2 flashing purple and black?

I have had the sims 2 university and nightlife for ages and they were fine. then today i installed the sims 2 free time and then when i went to play it my hills on the neighbourhood were flashing purple! it was really weird! so i quit and now i want to know how to fix it. i was thinking of getting a graphics card because it might be that.
