Why are people so angry about the Mosque near Ground Zero?

I mean people should have the right to build whatever they want wherever they want as long as it doesn't violate zoning laws. I think it's ridiculous that hateful people are making such a big deal about it. Are they building it exactly were the Twin Towers were? NO!... Is it going to be a mosque for militant extremists? NO!...So why do you care? I'm an atheist and I'm all for religious freedom.
