Why are so many religious people intolerant of other religions?

I am an atheist, and proud of it. But so many people try to tell me that I am going to hell for my beliefs. They say if I don't believe in a god/God, I won't go to "heaven." And what angers me the most is why do religious people (Christians mostly) say that it is a sin to be gay? Why can't people allow others to marry, when it really has no effect on them?
