Why aren't UFC main event fights highlighted on local news in sports?

Mixed martial arts is a legitimate and legal sport...

So why aren't fight results shown in your local news sport broadcast?

The best reason that I can muster is that, since it is not something that happens every week or several times a week, that the local news stations don't feel it is as important to cover it. MMA is still relatively young in terms of being a regulated sport (it still has yet to be regulated in NY state) and given time, it will be covered more. ESPN covers it whenever there is a major event occurring, and the best way i can compare it to is boxing. Boxing is not covered as much as other sports on major stations, and I attribute that to the sport's infrequent nature as the reasoning behind this. Again, give MMA a few years and maybe it will be covered more.

Although MMA is a legitimate sport, some papers may not feel like it is a sport deserving of a mention due to multiple reasons. It could be that the editors feel that the sport is too violent, or as the politicians have put it "human cockfighting". It may just be that MMA isn't as big a draw as other sports in the area. All in all it depends upon the the paper itself.

Many sports broadcasts like ESPN still don't consider it to be a legitimate sport. It's gotten so much better over the years, and MMA continues to make great strides. Give it about 5 years and it will start getting the recognition it deserves.
