I am trying to connect my computer to my home theater system via toslink, and can only seem to get a stereo signal out of it. How can I get 7.1 or even 5.1 surround from the toslink?

I am using the on board audio from an ASUS M4A79T deluxe motherboard. According to the manual, it has "realtek 1200 8-channel high definition audio CODEC" It has an option for an "hd front panel audio module" or an "ac'97 front panel audio module". I currently have it set to the HD. I am running windows 7.
I am sending the audio to an onkyo htr530 7.1 surround receiver via a 25' toslink cable.

I've tried changing the listening mode to direct as well as a few other modes. I do get stereo sound, but I want to get surround sound.
Yes, I attempted to go to both the audio manager as well as the sound card settings, and the configure tab that would allow me to adjust speaker settings was shaded out, and unable to be accessed. So far as I can tell, it will only give the speaker configuration option when the analog outputs are in use. I have played games as well as dvds and bluray. They only play in stereo.
