1. Some people (mainly rich white men) wanted to preserve the supremacy they had...ie: didn't want any of the Civil Rights Movement to happen...didn't want equality for blacks, women, Asians, whatever.
2. Some people didn't agree with how he was going about it. He was a peaceful protester, and some thought he should be more aggressive.
3. Ultimately, he was seen as a threat.
