Why did the police go to the back window of my SUV when he pulled me over?

I got pulled over for driving without my lights on. And instead of going to the front drivers window he went to the backwindow. there was one person in the back. Why didnt he go to my drivers window?

You make no mention of anybody in front passenger seat....
was there a front passenger?
driver in front and another person in back and no front passenger looks fishy.
and no lights.....that's about as gangsta as it gets.

Sometimes, for officer safety reasons, the officer will not walk ahead of anyone in the car. He may contact you through the back window, or may ask you to step out.

By doing so, he keeps all occupants in his field of view.

Like Citicop and Trooper3 say, it's an officer safety thing. First off you were driving without headlights, and there was more that one person in the vehicle. Foe the Officer's safety he had to secure the scene as best he could. If it was me everyone in the vehicle would have been asked to get out so I could see everyone. Were you in high crime area?
