Why did they have to kill the escaped lioness at Mogo Zoo?

And a few quotes: "A lioness was shot dead after escaping from its enclosure at an Australian zoo." "She never reached a public area but there was a concern she may have." "She was moving quite slowly toward a public area, but under the circumstances a decision was made to put her down."

I want to know why? When I read this today, I felt very sad and angry. Shouldn't a zoo have tranquilizer guns? Why couldn't they have darted her and then dragged her back to the enclosure?
Why should she be killed because she got outside her enclosure? Doesn't it seem so unfair that us humans imprison these wild creatures, and then when they figure a way to get out of their prison we shoot them dead?
I understand that a lioness could pose great danger to the public. But they could have gave her a chance and tranquilized her.
I can only ask why they didn't do that?
I don't know. I looked around on the internet and it most of the information that I found says it takes between 3-10 minutes for a tranquilizer gun to take affect.
I'm not trying to be Steve Irwin. But I think us humans are getting too big for our britches, so to speak. I'm sure the zoo killed her because they feared that she "could" attack someone, which means they would be paying out their backsides.
They didn't make the best decision for the lion, they made the best decision for their business. That part makes me sad...just to think what the world has come to.
In Taiwan in 2007, an Orangutan escaped and was tranquilized. Here is a link with the video: http://cbs5.com/pets/orangutan.taiwan.shaoshan.2.455903.html
He roamed the zoo for over 2 hours in a public restaurant, overturned tables, motorbikes, etc.! And yet they chose not to kill him.
They didn't need to kill the lioness. She didn't even do anything wrong.
Nathan - do you know how strong an Orangutan is? They are 4-7 (depending on the sex) times stronger than a human male!
I have to strongly disagree that an Orangutan is not as dangerous as a Lioness. I would have to say they could even be more dangerous, since they have the ability to open doors and throw objects.
Thank you Taffy! That is exactly what I meant, but I couldn't find the right words.
They could have given her a chance and had the Marksman ready "just in case". It's all so sad.
I see why you are a "top contributor" with such a smart answer.

well yes it takes up to 20 mins for a tranq to work, and so in the interests of public safety this decision was made, not the right one in my opinion, and anyone who disagrees can meet and greet orina at din dins. They should be heavily fined for not keeping secured areas, this is why I don't like zoos very much, wildlife reserves now thats a better thing.
