why did they make the gossip girl characters a year younger in the tv show?

in the book they are seniors but in the tv show they are juniors.

i think that makes the tv show a bit unbelievable coz i cant realy belive the serena and georgina and that guys sex-tape/cocaine thing wud have happened when they were no older than half way through their sophmore year

i think so that they could make the show last longer?
if they're a year younger.. they have more time to be in school, keeping it interesting for the viewers.
