Why do a lot of Americans look up to celebrities instead of scientists and engineers?

Americans look up to people like Tupac (like that other question below) and such but not people who were of any tangible benefit to humanity, like, let's say, the people at NASA who put man on the moon or maybe the people responsible for designing the first computers or robots..why?

Because like some said before Celebrities are more visually appealing and there are a lot of people who want to be famous or be a star.
