Why do a lot of Christians believe the USA was founded under Christian principles?

I'm not trying to start a religious battle, but it is historical fact that the founding fathers of America were not only non-Christian, but some of them even spoke out against Christianity entirely. I just want to know why a lot of Christians, when presented with this info in black and white, refuse to believe it.

They accept every word of the bible as historical fact, yet they won't accept historical fact as historical fact. It baffles me.

Out of 153 of the men who signed our three most important historical documents, only three refused to align themselves with some form of Christianity (Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Cornelius Harnett). You can look it up in the Department of the Interior if you do not believe me.
Why do you outright lie in the statement about "not starting a religious battle"? The facts are NOT on your side.

Because that's what their pastors told them, and they don't know any better.

Americans, in general, aren't renowned for their deep knowledge of history...

In 1776, the majority of Americans either were Christian or were willing to be thought to be. But the principles on which the country was founded were secular. That's because so many people had experienced religious discrimination and persecution in the old world. The problems had primarily been between sects of Christianity, but our founding fathers had enough insight to realize the same problems would arise between Christians and non-Christians unless they included strong protections for freedom of conscience. The First Amendment was placed first for a really good reason.
