Why do Brittish people get so protective over soccer?

I recently moved to England and Soccer is on tv all the time and in bars people oftentimes talk about soccer. I never really followed the sport before so I thought I'd like to learn about it. Trouble is I ask the Brits in the bars about it and they tell me I'm a 'dumb yank,' 'stupid f****** septic,' all types of s***. I go on UK soccer forums and they tell me I'm a 'troll.' so my question is, what is their f****** problem?! Seriously?!

cause they probably affraid u might criticise their sport i live in england to but i am originally from europe to begin with so its easy for me to adopt . I can say the same thing about americans and their sport . I would probably get yelled at in usa for being euro trash !!!!! . I mean come on its human nature to treat foreigners like shit really sad but true . I must mean they givin u a hard time hahah sorry to laugh lol

nooo it's the English league. Scotland is apart of Btritain and has it's own league. mate football is so important to us, u dont understand
