Why do kids have summers off?

I have always wondered about this. Why do kids have summer off? Its just like having fall or winter off.. its just kinda weird. Anyways i would like to know!

I think it stems from the old days when schools let kids out to help with the farm work.

Just to give kids a break from school, and what better time to be on vacation than summer! You cant go on a cruise or in the pool during fall or winter. Plus its probobly too hot to be working all day in the summer

Because they DID have to, used to, help with the summer farm work.

After most families moved into the city, it became a 'scheduled tradition' - now only serving the practical value of providing the working parent's an easy method of scheduling vacations.
