Why do people add salt to water when cooking potatoes/vegetables?

I thought it was to do with boiling temperature of water but my other half says it's to add flavour.
 
yes you are right to add flavor and kill the bitterness of the potatoes and some vegetables.
 
We add salt to remove bitterness. Potatoes cannot absorb salt easily if you are adding before serving or in last minute so it is recommended that to add salt while boiling
 
It is for taste.
I lightly under-salt what I am cooking and have taste test just before serving to see if it needs more, remembering others will add more again at the table.

It is easier to add more than trying to fix something that has too much.
 
salt is actually added to water when cooking vegetables because salt make them soft and easy to cook.
