Why do people assign human qualities/emotions to dogs?

Do they realise that a dog is just a dumb animal driven by nothing more than the very basic of needs?
That a dog has not got the brain capacity to understand, never mind experience things such as loyalty, love, guilt or affection in the TRUE senses of the world. That a dog is completely self serving and that it's actions are horribly misunderstood and designated to be something they are not.
It is not a human, why must some insist that it is capable of thinking like one and acting out of the same motivations that we do?
Do some people not GET THIS?
 
What I do get is that dogs are affectionate, loving animals ... I think you're referring to CATS.
