Why do people believe that dreams have symbolic meaning?

Usually people look for some sort of symbolic meaning in dreams. However; so many people are dumb (like cows) and too stupid to understand symbolism in the first place. So how could their puny cow brain create a symbolic dream when it doesn't understand symbolism?
