they obviously have problems sitting still and paying attention which is why they suck in school to begin with

Oh I don't know, little things like bigotry creeping into education and medicine. Boys being drugged for acting like boys, and the long-term side effects on their bodies and lives. Little things like that.

They're curbing natural energies that all children (except maybe grossly obese ones) have by this medication to make them passive, and obedient in school and home. It's the easy way out, like a "cheat" for parenting, and it lowers the supply to those that actually need the ritalin. I don't know all the effects from the drug, but they obviously can't be good with such radical changes! Take the playstation away from them and let them kick a ball around everyday - that's what's going to help in the short AND long run.

My old friend actually had ADHD, he was so hyper-active, he never learnt how to read in all his 20 years. Really, really eccentric, and he ate around 6000(?) calories a day but couldn't even gain a single kilo from it.

Because these boys are being drugged for being children. It's absolutely ridiculous, unnecessary, and probably leads to complications down the road....children, and boys in particular, aren't designed to spend 7 hours a day sitting still in a classroom. It's not their fault, and there's nothing wrong with them the way they are.

They're also prescribing it for the wrong reasons. My little brother is on it, and I liked him hyperactive the way he was before..it was refreshing. I, on the other hand, could probably benefit from being on some sort of ADHD medication because concentrating is a real struggle for me at times, but no one thinks I need it because I'm not overtly hyperactive and have a 3.96 GPA.

Well when you put it like that you're bound to reinforce already-existing misconceptions about ADD/ADHD, and the role of medication. It would be educational, I think, if even just a couple of people who have had success stories told their story here on GS...since everyone seems thoroughly convinced that ADD/ADHD are bogus diagnoses and that there is some sort of great feminist conspiracy to get every boy on Ritalin so as to emasculate the entire male gender.

Edit: Not every boy/girl who "sucks" at academics is ADD or ADHD. But...you're right ...if a person has the disorder and it is extreme, it will interfere with learning.

It's a form of child abuse as far as I'm concerned. My nephew is a very bright child who always made good grades in school. He was simply disruptive and fidgety at times. He needed exercise and discipline, not drugs.

Sitting still and paying attention can be done by any chimpanzee with enough training. A great mind is something to nurture, understand and protect. Modern teachers often ignore potential, and use immediate and insignificant behaviors to brush students aside. By putting these students on drugs they make the disciplinary portion of their jobs easier, at the expense of a child's potential. Sorry lady, but if you have a noble cause, your views are doing it a grave disservice.

Schools don't teach in a way that boys will learn best at, that is the problem. Einstein even failed school, can you guess why??
