why do people smile and laugh when theres nothing funny?

I live in a 3 floor house with my family. Down stairs (2nd floor) is rent out to these 3 college kids. They moved in 2 days ago. After work tonight, I was opening the door and 3 of them were going out. one of the guys said "hey, how its going"..I said "hey, good"..his friend kind alaughed and smiled..why ?
 
How many times are you going to ask this? They were being friendly by saying hello. That's it.
 
well,i can't give you a certain reason,but the most common that people usually used to smile when thy meet friends or family members.not funny or joking just being happy from the inside of you to be able to see him/her happy also and healthy,and not to make other people think you have problems or you're sad.Moreover, you can see some people smiling while you can feel that they are suffering from something or sad for some reason that you don't know(like they caring burden)..
 
Making fun of you, were talking about something funny before you came in, awkward. I don't know?
 
many people laugh, smile, giggle, yawn, rub their eyes, play with their ears, ect.... when they are nervous or at a loss for words. Dont worry about it when you get to know each other better he will most likely stop. good luck.
 
may be they have seasonal laughing time,may be you were caught by their time.sorry.

Don't think too much into it it's no big deal they're college kids..
