Why do Republicans cite Abraham Lincoln in defense of being called racist?

From the 1850's through the 1960's the Northeast was the bastion of the Republican Party. Republicans were mainly New England liberals that touted social progressivism.

The socially conservative Republican party exists today because of the mass migration of racist whites leaving the Democrats during the Civil Rights Movement. It's not even the same party anymore.

So why cite a person that would probably be a Democrat if he were living today?
King O gets thumbs up for saying he's a racist...what is wrong with this world.
