Why do some DVD players stop playing new DVD's after two years?

This happened to me with my LG player recorder. I talked to a friend and he said the same thing happened to his. How come? It goes along fine for two years and all the sudden it doesn't play any new ones but it continues to play the old ones it used to play.

This question pertains to an external stand alone unit, not a PC unit.
