Why do some Hollywood celebs refuse to let anyone look them in the eye?

One story told by the very famous Charlotte Church, is when she was appearing on the Letterman show in America when she was 9, a researcher told her not to have eye contact with Tom Cruise and to always speak to him without looking directly at his eyes.
she mentioned this in a lot of interviews, Ive heard this about other arrogant celebs, what is the reason for this strange behavior

I don't think many actually do this, and it's more of a Hollywood myth kind of thing. But if they do, I'm assuming it's because they're stuck up and think they're too good for whomever is trying to look at them.

Maybe she wasn't looking Tom Cruise into his eyes because she would get star struck or hes really handsome and she doesn't want him to know that she likes him. I think that its hard for anyone to look at anyone in the eyes though even when you are being 110 percent serious its because its kinda awkward and weird.. I don't even look at the person in the eye when I'm interviewing with them. I don't think their being ignorant for not looking them in the eye its something normal I can't even look at someone in the eye. It just shows their normal. People look away and not in their eyes to think more about what they have to say it really helps instead of saying the answer right away while looking at them.
