Why do the Vikings play in a dome when other northern teams like the Packers play...

yeah your right. dam idiots. that makes sense why the redneck (jared allen) came to minnesota. cause they had a good D line and they were indoors. dam sissies. however favre did play great though in the monday night bears game last year. it probably gets way too cold there though anyway. who wants to play in -30 degree weather for two straight months?

Probably because whoever financed the stadium decided it needed a roof so that they could use it for other purposes when the football team wasn't on it. You're not going to book many conventions or concerts in an open air stadium in Minnesota for about 6 months out of the year.

There has even been discussion about building a retractable roof stadium in San Diego for the Chargers although it has the best weather of any NFL city. They want to see if the Convention and Visitors Bureau will help foot part of the bill and use it as an extension of the Convention Center.

It is pretty sad though since I used to love watching them play in the old Metropolitan Stadium

Barkley, check your stuff before you call someone else an idiot! The all time series is 49-47-1 in favor of the packers.

As for the dome, at the time the metrodome was built multi-purpose stadiums, dome or open were all the rage, and playing baseball in Minny they wanted a dome (and should have put at least a retractable on the Twins park)

The dome is what they could get built in the early 80's. They didn't have a lot of choice, the old Met was falling apart and this is what they got.

They are working on plans for a new stadium to try to get passed in the state legislatures. They have all three: open air, retractable, full dome proposed. The open air would be the cheapest therefore it may mean the return of open air football to Minny in the near future.
