I shake my head at Phelps for the bong incident everytime I hear about it. It's not just him, but our society seems to have a habit of placing athletes and actors and such a high pedestal that when they make the slightest mistake, even their fall is felt by us. Why do we do this to ourselves?
We all know actors and athletes are just people-- they're human and will make mistakes, it's not a matter of whether or not they make mistakes, just when. I'm not saying I expect every decent example of a celebrity to fall down, but they aren't God either. I have to cringe everytime I hear a *decent* actress say that she won't be into drugs, insane partying, or lewd behavior because chances are years down the road, that's exactly what happens. So I feel they sorta set themselves up too.
But maybe the main problem is we look up to these people too much instead of the people who are so much closer to us? For example, teachers, family members, church/community leaders. These are people who can have a direct impact and example in our lives, who if they make a mistake, we are able to forgive them more easily.
Just my thoughts, what do you all think?
