dough on DVD? I mean I understand many people go to the movies to watch stuff blow up big and to see pretty people make out which I do also but people will pay for a smaller and often times better film on DVD where as no one goes to see it in theaters. I don't get it.
 
People usually go to the theater with a group of friends/date to see a movie that (hopefully) most of the said party are interested in. Since bad blockbuster movies get more buzz than your genrally Golden Globe material, more people have heard of it and want to see it.
Plus, usually you go to see movies for fun, and good movies are often rather sad.

By the time the DVD comes out, word will have gotten around about the movie, and if it has OSCAR WINNER or OSCAR NOMINEE on the case, people are more likely to buy it. Plus, some people feel the need to buy "smart people movies" in order to look better. (Oh, you have Dr. Zhivago? / Yes, it is my favorite movie! --has never opened the box--)

This is my theory, anyway. Mostly though, all that advertising that goes into summer blockbusters REALLY, REALLY helps.
 
A good movie might not have had a very big advertising campaign, and thus a weak box office performance, but good word of mouth will lead to it selling well on DVD.
 
I guess this would depend on what someone perceives as a good movie. For me, a good movie is generally one that's quirky, unique, or full of dark humor. I generally tend to like foreign films too. I think this is because if a foreign movie is able to sift through all the shit and make it to America it has to be decent, right?

I think the reason these types of movies don't do too hot in theaters is because the average person doesn't want to think when they're watching a movie. They just want to see crap blow up or attractive people hump - and what better way to do that then to watch it on a humongous screen?
 
Idiots like bad movies.
Idiots go to cinemas, they dont mind being ripped off, and having the experience ruined by screaming children and punks kicking the seats and talking loud.
People will good taste wait and pay the same amount to own good films, and get a better experience watching them at home in a much more comfortable chair on a big screen HDTV.
 
Its just a popularity thing, best means of communication is word of mouth...i didnt see slumdog millionaire in theatres cause its ads werent appealing, but i later saw it when i heard of its popularity....i saw batman in theatres cause it was amazing, but that had a lot of popularity before it was released too, its mostly about people paying less for dvd's and it gets spread by word of mouth, kinda seasoning in society's mind. i prefer to go the the theatre, and spend it with friends, my theatres screens suck ass, but the popcorn is awesome. not boring like at home
